Students explore music's power to sell and promote products. They explain how music can transcend its genre and become a symbol of an historical time, an historical event, an aspect of popular culture or a group of people.

Students discuss significant figures in music history and read an article about the Smithsonian's Hip-Hop exhibit. In groups, they develop and curate an exhibition of hip-hop music and history using artifacts that represent relevant people and events.

Students explore a brief overview of music history from ancient to 20th Century. They are introduced to composers, songs and important non-musical people and events in each period. Students follow music's growth through time.

Students participate in a variety of experiences to investigate the tie between music and history. It combines music history with historical events and includes information about composers and the music that they composed. Students also have the opportunity to become the composer and compose a song for the class to perform.
