Students share, through discussion and writing, their feelings about violence in schools, as well as about ways in which such incidents and tragedies could be prevented.

Students review the steps to succeed in middle school. After watching a video, they discuss the things students do that aren't successful and the techniques they used to help them be more productive. They practice opening locks and review the map of their new middle school.

Students brainstorm the good things they have heard about their school. Using a worksheet, they rate the items in order of importance of items to be rated on showing one's school pride. In groups, they create ways for them to create more school pride and share their answers with the class.

Students review the keys of working together well. In groups, they complete a worksheet which lists items middle schoolers have reported that make them proud of their school. They rate the items in order of importance to them. They share their results with other groups and the class.

Students examine a case between the three Tinker children verses the Des Moines Independent Community School District. In groups, they identify the issues of the case and discuss the verdict. As a class, they discuss their own opinions on the case and if the actions violated the student's first amendment rights.
