Students are introduced to the hazards of fire and practice fire safety . They explore how to "stop, drop, and roll", and construct paper "Stop, Drop, and Roll hats.

Students study fire safety techniques. They examine the uses of fire fighting equipment. They discuss how uncontrolled fire is a safety hazard and how controlled fire in an important part of life. They design fire safety plans for home and school.

Students examine ways to deal with unsafe fire situations. They determine what to do when someone else is casing a dangerous fire situation such as playing with a lighter, burning candles near curtains, or smoking in bed. Working with a partner, they role play a the situation while practicing telling the other person, "No" so they do not harm themselves. They are assessed on their responses to the dangerous situations.

Students listen to a reading of "Clifford the Firehouse Dog," and develop a list of fire safety rules. Using different colored construction paper, they create facsimile "Clifford shape books," and illustrate safety rules in them.
