Students describe the Phoenicians as a trading people who lived long ago on the shores of the Mediterranean. They explain that the Phoenicians invented the first form of our alphabet and write a short paragraph using the Phoenician alphabet.

Students use iPhoto to create a class alphabet book. After the teacher reads several alphabet books to the class, students brainstorm the names of objects that start with each letter of the alphabet.

Students match the beginning sound of a picture on a flashcard to a letter. They are introduced to a target letter of the alphabet and identify the sound it makes. Students then draw a flashcard from a pile. If the picture begins with the same sound they can tape it to a poster, if not they replace the card.

Students work together to produce an alphabet book. Individually, they have a specific amount of time to take digital pictures of objects but must include a letter from the alphabet in each one. They work together to compile all of the photographs into their class alphabet book.
