Literacy Block- Spider Web Words, Handwriting, Inclined Plane

Students participate in a circle activity in which they make a Spider Word Web by rolling ball of yarn from student to student while putting words together. They study the phonics and handwriting skills for the "qu" letter combination. Students are explained that law enforcement officials use many kinds of evidence when trying to solve a crime. They discuss exactly how investigators analyze handwriting on a written document associated with a crime. Students also discuss that forensic scientists not only analyze the style of the handwriting, about also the paper used. They work in groups and one group explore the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh, Jr., and the other group, the Clifford Irving forgery.

Calligraphy Acrostic

Students identify and interpret historic handwriting styles and how to use calligraphy tools and ink to write. Then they use dictionaries to find different words to describe themselves to go with every letter of their first name. Students also place parchment paper over the lined paper to help keep lines straight and complete the final calligraphy portion of the assignment with illustrations.
