Students analyze the way that the media views the community that they live in. They poll residents about the strengths and weaknesses of their community and devise ways such as community service projects that they can improve the image of their community.

Students examine how the media's portrayals of race and crime affects our attitudes towards various minority groups. They analyze a poster, follow crime news stories for one month, and write a report on racial identification in stories about crime.

Students examine how advertising and the media affect self-image. They watch and discuss a video, identify feminine and masculine ideals, evaluate ads with negative images, and create a 'Magazine Ad Review' booklet.
