A Walk Through the 20th Century

Students research the people, places, and events of a particular decade of the 20th Century. They write a report about that decade, and create a booth of memorabilia, music, dress, pictures and other artifacts representing the time period. The booths are then displayed during a school event called "Celebration of the 20th Century."

 

Zoom - In: Early 20th Century Original Student Math Problem

Seventh graders solve a percentage problem that was written by a student in the early 20th century. In this percentage and problem solving lesson, learners read and solve a problem that is shown to them through a PowerPoint presentation. They reason out the answer and decide why the student choose to write about the topic. They determine the correlation to the time period in which it was written.

 

Early 20th Century Child Labor: Writing for Understanding

Students utilize primary sources to discover the hardships faced by child workers in the early 20th century. They take on the role of a photographer researching the lives of these students and create field notes on the photos they analyze. Lastly, they write a letter to the president on the hardships faced by these students.

Fifth graders sort pictures of types of transportation. In this turn of the century lesson, 5th graders view pictures of transportation from the 19th and 20th centuries, sort the pictures into their appropriate category, and complete a worksheet where they explain their decisions.

Young scholars identify any patterns or differences that emerge in political, economic, environmental, and social history after comparing the events and historical processes between one period and another in the same civilization. They form small groups and complete four charts showing the political, social, economic, and environmental changes between the 19th and 20th centuries in chronological order.

Students consider the plight of immigrants. In this 19th and 20th century history lesson, students create digital stories using photographs and audio files from the Library of Congress that feature the experiences of immigrants to America during the time period.
