Young scholars identify any patterns or differences that emerge in political, economic, environmental, and social history after comparing the events and historical processes between one period and another in the same civilization. They form small groups and complete four charts showing the political, social, economic, and environmental changes between the 19th and 20th centuries in chronological order.
Students examine the role of women in Texas politics. In this women's leadership activity, students research women who have served Texas as city officials, Texas legislature members, and U.S. Congress members. Students write about their findings and participate in a debate simulation.
Learners explore political regimes of the 20th century. In this government systems activity, students watch "Fighting 20th Century Tyranny" and discuss the functions of political regimes. Learners review the personal stories of 5 individuals who escaped the Communist or Nazi regimes.
Sixth graders study the social movements of the 20th century. In this social movements lesson plan, 6th graders discuss social unrest, review social and political movements of the 20th century, and discuss the main movements for unrest. Students divide into groups, select a movement, and research the movement, and create a PowerPoint for the information.
