Addition Lesson Plans

A very thorough lesson, with a strong technology component, awaits your class. They view a PowerPoint presentation which covers techniques used to solve addition and subtraction word problems. Then, in the computer lab, they open up an Excel spreadsheet and solve seven problems. They also utilize worksheets that are embedded in this very fine, and well-designed plan.

Students practice basic addition facts and measuring skills. In this addition lesson, students are provided with drywall tape and work in groups of four at a long table. Partners take turns generating addends and marking the matching number of centimeters on the tape. As each problem is solved, tape is cut and added to a line running the length of the table. The partners that reach the end of the table first are the winners.

First graders act out number stories from number cards. In this addition and subtraction to 20 instructional activity, 1st graders become the manipulatives and line up to show the number stories.

Fourth graders investigate various ways of interpreting a decimal problem.  In this addition and subtraction of decimals lesson, 4th graders complete money problems. Students relate the concept to other decimal problems. Students complete additional problems.

First graders access prior knowledge of addition and writing simple equations. In this pattern block activity, 1st graders play a game where they add blocks to gain points. The more blocks the more points. Player with the most points wins.

Students investigate addition. For this computational fluency lesson, students participate in a game in which they solve addition problems quickly and accurately in order to score a point for their team.
