Africa Deforestation Lesson Plans

Students examine the types of tools and maps used in Geography. They create their own geographic perspective in regards to Africa. Using an issue of their choice, they analyze the issue through the geographic perspective. They answer questions related to the issue they choose as well.

Students examine the impact the Atlantic Slave Trade had on Africa and the African people, through the analysis of literature and film. They identify the geographic regions of Africa and locate selected African countries, countries that are used as later case studies in the examination the legacy of slavery and colonialism

Students examine the human impacts that conservationist Michael Fay noticed on his Congo Trek, and Africa MegaFlyover projects. They write recommendations to the region's governments and businesses, explaining what should be done about human impacts.

Learners investigate the process of desertification in the Sahel region of Africa. They discuss photos from a National Geographic magazine, analyze the physical/political map of the Sahara, identify the causes and effects of desertification on a handout, and write a conversation between two people.

Students examine migration patterns in Africa and China. They watch excerpts from a documentary, define key vocabulary words, complete various student organizers, and create a poster.

Learners view the video "Medical Crisis in Africa." They discuss ways that AIDS is affecting children in Africa. Learners explore more about children in Africa who are affected by AIDS. They work in small groups and read and article on the topic, learners summarize what they have read, and they create a poster with images, excerpts, quotes, and data.

This lesson has students use a conference format to reach a consensus on ways to slow deforestation and promote sustainable development. This lesson has students are assigned roles to play during the conference.

Learners investigate our lack of forests by examining population.  In this deforestation lesson, learners research a list of the continents, their populations, and remaining forest area.  Learners discuss why forests are disappearing and what the correlation is between forest area and population.
