Eighth graders create career portfolios, speak with the school counselor, and develop and educational plan. Individually, 8th graders discuss career options and how an educational plan can assist them in future goals. They explore various job markets and describe vocabulary words.
Students study the history, products, and anatomy of corn. In this corn study instructional activity, students discuss corn products and complete a related worksheet. Students bring products from home that use corn and categorize the items. Students select five corn products and write how their daily routine would change without the items.
Young scholars explore the origins of maize. In this maize lesson, students examine the Spanish and Mexican foods made with corn as they research the connection between West Virginia and Mexico. Young scholars create PowerPoint presentations on maize and conduct Internet research to locate maize recipes, gather the needed ingredients, and make them for a class fiesta.
Students explore Afro-American history. They identify the commonality between African, Carolinian and Cleveland Black culture. Students explore the water cycle, oceanography, hydrology and bio-geochemical processes. They discuss the interconnected nature of Earth cycles and draw parallels between historical accounts and present day events.
