Hold a mini-Olympics at your school! Young Olympians will discuss their prior knowledge of the Olympics and give reason the Olympics are important. They will also research Ancient Greece and the beginning of the Olympics. then design and implement a mini Olympic sports event. Learners will share knowledge about various cultures around the world as they participate in the Opening and Closing ceremonies after participating in various athletic events.
Sixth graders complete a Venn Diagram. In this government comparison lesson, 6th graders discuss how rules are similar and different at home, school and in their community. Students analyze the black-figure painting style of ancient Greece and its influence on Neoclassical artists during the 18th century, as seen in drawing, painting and silhouettes, or shadow portraits. For this ancient art lesson, students use the technique of paper cutting to create an original two-dimensional work of art that expresses a personal statement. Sixth graders examine Ancient Greece and its development of democracy. In this Greek History lesson, 6th graders explore the rise of city-states in Greece and its overall effect on the development of democracy. The class continues with an in depth discussion on what their original idea of democracy was, and how it has changed.
Students complete maps of Ancient Greece identifying key sites of the ancient Olympic games. After watching a video, they complete worksheets about the games and the athletes. Students discuss how the spirit of Ekecheiria, the "Sacred Truce," can apply to their own lives. The lesson plan includes several extension activities.

They then demonstrate how to use a video camera and express script on camera while in an ancient Grecian or Roman costume.
