By writing a travel article in the voice of a writer living in 1910, secondary learners discuss the work of the Lyme Art Colony. They visit Florence Griswold Museum's online resources to go on a virtual tour of the Lyme Art Colony. Then, they use short biographies about the lives of the artists, and newspaper articles published about the colony to develop their presentation.

Wow, what a terrific lesson! After learning about natural disasters, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, pupils write an article and publish their work. This lesson is chock full of resources and supplemental materials.

Students explore the characteristics of a feature article. In this feature article lesson, students look at examples in magazines and pick out the characteristics that grab their attention. Students also discuss how they can choose things to write  and use photographs and a string voice to grab the readers attention.

Learners examine how the Articles of Confederation evolved into the U.S. Constitution. In this government lesson, students analyze primary sources available from the Library of Congress. Learners analyze primary images and documents to determine what needed to be done to fix the Articles of Confederation.

Fourth graders read about Arkansas in the early 1800s and view photographs from that time period about African American culture, civil rights, sports, and music. They write a newspaper article for the Arkansas Gazette.

Students explore feature articles. In this feature article lesson, students discover the things that make a feature article. Students examine how authors and editors use pictures and text organizers to make an article grab attention. Students compare and contrast two magazine articles.

Students write a newspaper article related to a sports event.  In this article writing lesson plan, students read sports-related articles, complete a graphic organizer to help them see the format of a newspaper article, then they work in groups to write two sports articles for their group's newspaper.  There is a link to the graphic organizer included in the lesson plan.

Students practice using the scientific process by solving a scientific problem.  In this research project lesson, students utilize the Natural Inquirer magazine to identify a research question which they write an introduction to and collect data to answer.  Students create graphs, photographs or charts to simulate their data while they create a Natural Inquirer style article.

Practice finding word meaning through context clues in a piece of informational text. The first part of the activity focuses on the "silent -e" rule, and on prefixes and suffixes. After this part, eighth graders read a magazine article and fill in a graphic organizer that identifies the main idea before writing a summary after discussing primary and secondary sources. 

Students explore economics by writing a fictitious news article. In this personal wealth instructional activity, students participate in a role-playing activity in which the year is 2025 and they must write an article about their extremely wealthy lifestyle. Students complete several worksheets which guide them in their article and identify the downsides of being extremely wealthy.
