Students receive informational handouts about photosynthesis, chemosynthesis and tubeworms (included with the lesson). Using the "Bacteriology Experiment Plan" handout, students compare the amount of bacteria found in two locations. They collect bacteria on the agar in Petri dishes. Students plan their own experiment, and carry it out.
Students explore basic bacteriological techniques. They investigate cell to cell communication and become aware of the environmental and evolutionary implications of this communication.
Students demonstrate knowledge of important advances in microbiology by creating a timeline of microbiological milestones. Student also demonstrate application of the many milestones in microbiology by researching and reporting on the current work being done by microbiologists. Each student researchers a microbiologist and use their findings to create a piece of the class microbiology timeline.
Students are given a two week period to put to use the knowledge they have gained while studying bacteria. As a culminating activity, students each receive three unknown bacteria to identify.

Third graders complete a KWL chart on what they already know about water and what they want to know. As a class, they participate in an activity in which they discover the amount of drinkable water on Earth and are introduced to the water cycle. In groups, they make their own model of an aquifer and experiment with different objects to see the effects of pollution and how water is purified.
Students test the factors that influence the rate at which a virus spreads through a population. They complete a lab activity then discuss data collected and review and answer a set of questions.
Students become familiar with the water cycle and water issues. In this water lesson students examine what they can do to protect their water.
Third graders create a KWL chart about water. In this environmental science activity, 3rd graders demonstrate how much water on Earth is usable. They act out the different stages of the water cycle.
