Bee Lesson Plans

Students design an experiment. In this bees instructional activity, students research pollination and work collaboratively to discover how bees aid in pollination.  Students use tomato plants and create experimental designs. Lesson adaptations and extensions are included.

Students recognize that bees are important in the reproduction of plants and to the survival of animals.  In this bee lesson, students become familiar with the parts of bees and how those adaptations help them pollinate plants. Students complete activities to show the importance of bees in the food chain and other bee functions.

Students explore biology by viewing YouTube insect videos. In this bee pollination lesson, students identify the importance of insect pollination and the impact it has on our own lives. Students view a bee pollination video on YouTube and complete an insect worksheet after.

Students design an experiment to show the effects of bee pollination on production of fruits and vegetables. They use flowering tomato plants to self-pollinate and cross-pollinate plants then record the number of fruits that begin growing on each plant.

Students construct bee puppets. They use them to act out some bee behaviors. They act out directions for the rest of the class to follow to find honey that has been hidden in the classroom or on the playground.They write a play, depicting a colony of bees swarming, from the time they decide to divide to the time the new colony finds a new home.

Students research information on worker bees. In this insect lesson, students review the body parts of insects and how bees find flowers. They discuss compound and simple eyes and the life cycle of a worker bee.

Students practice counting bees and learn about their characteristics. In this bee and counting lesson, students listen to Buzz, Buzz, Busy Bees while counting the bees and discussing the characteristics of the bees. They play a game called "Bee Tree" which emphasizes the use of fine motor skills. They draw a picture of a bee landing on a flower.

Students explore the pollination cycle. In this pollination lesson plan, students investigate the process of pollination. Students illustrate the pollination cycle of bees on paper plates.

First graders participate in a phoneme isolation activity, examine the concept of symbols, and listen to the teacher read the Aesop's fable of "The Bear and the Bees." They identify and discuss symbols in their community, listen to the story, and answer story comprehension questions.

Students participate in a version of a Geography Bee. In teams, students compete with one another and the score is kept.
