After locating Latin American countries on a world map, children read about how microbanks are loaning money to help start small businesses. Involving both current events and economics, the teacher introduces the article with a map activity and vocabulary challenge. The class reads the news article and participate in a think-pair-share discussion. The lesson includes interdisciplinary follow-up activities.
Third graders practice creating a business! They discuss all the elements needed to run a business. In small groups, they create their own business and write a business plan. Very inventive instructional activity.

Students explore business practices by creating a portfolio in class. In this business writing lesson, students identify the causes for a businesses success and failure before deciding on a business they would like to create. Students create a business portfolio utilizing advertisements and a document camera to share creative work with the class.
Students explore how local businesses support their state or regional economy, listing products grown or manufactured in their state or region. They write interview questions to ask an owner of a local business that uses local products.

Students examine businesses from long ago noting whether they provided goods or services, explore how some businesses have evolved, and discuss how some family names may be indicators of occupations and businesses of the past.
