Twelfth graders discover the uses of a checkbook. In this business math lesson, 12th graders discuss the benefits of checking accounts and compare the services offered by local banks. Students then practice writing checks and recording debits and credits in a register.
Learners focus on tool use by primates, examining in particular the tools chimpanzees use. They create similar tools themselves, and think critically about the differences and similarities between human and other primate tool use.
Students investigate the tools and technology used in ocean exploration. They participate in a simulated ocean exploration trip, take samples from a simulated ocean, complete dive logs, and analyze the results.
Seventh graders use Internet to familiarize themselves with variety of stone tools used by early man, create information chart describing each tool and its purpose, and discuss why tools have survived thousands of years.
Students view examples of copper tooling. They create a sketch the size of their copper. Students tape the top and bottom of the sketch to their copper and place a stack of newspaper under the copper. They trace all lines of their sketch with a ball point pen to transfer the design. A second lesson on tooling is included after this lesson.
Students investigate how agriculture can be used as a political tool. They watch a PowerPoint presentation and take notes, identify reasons for protecting agriculture, write an essay about a current political issue in international agriculture, and develop a skit.
Young scholars create weather tracking tools. In this weather instructional activity, students create a rain gauge, barometer, and hair hygrometer in order to monitor the weather. They use everyday household items like rulers, coffee cans, and cardboard.
Students investigate how to use gardening tools safely. In this gardening tools lesson, students discover the names of tools and their use. Students practice using the tools and illustrate them. Students play matching games and look at gardening catalogs to choose more tools they would like to have.
Fifth graders create fraction tool kits to find equivalent fractions and convert between fractions and mixed numbers. In small groups they create the fraction tool kits, and using the kits play four different fraction related games, including fraction equivalent bingo.
Students view different shapes drawn by teacher on board, identify each shape by name, discuss importance of knowing difference between shapes when building something, and complete shapes worksheet. Students then dicuss different types of tools and jobs they do, and complete "Tools Count!" activity sheet.
