Learners research and view a video on the geography of the Caribbean. For this Caribbean geography lesson, students go on an imaginary trip to the Caribbean and write postcards and letters telling of their trip. Learners will include information on culture, products and geographical features.
Students complete a unit that explores the cultures of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba through cooking. They follow step-by-step directions of a variety of recipes, create a Caribbean scrapbook or cookbook, and participate in a simulated market day.
Students imagine themselves on an island in the Caribbean to make postcards for their classmates and write letters about a vacation to their relatives. They view a video on the geography of the islands then research the tourism on one of the islands using the internet.
Students become familiar with the music of Trinidad. In this Caribbean music lesson, students listen to music from Trinidad and find it on the map. Students recognize the calypso beat and can imitate them. Students can create their own percussion instruments. Students sing songs with a calypso beat and write their own words to the beat.
Sixth graders study the geography of the Caribbean Islands. In this Caribbean geography lesson, 6th graders use maps and atlases to find certain locations in the Caribbean. Students practice using different types of maps, using latitude and longitude coordinates, and gain experience with cartography.
Ninth graders take a trip to Central American and the Caribbean. In this culture and geography lesson, 9th graders research selected countries of the region. Students use their findings to create tri-fold brochures to share with others.
Students are introduced to about Caribbean culture through the preparation and sampling of Caribbean food, as well as become familiar with Caribbean folk songs and poetry. They also experience blindness in order to form a deeper understanding of the novel Timothy of the Cay.
Young scholars read stories about the Caribbean. They write about the Caribbean lifestyle. Students write their own stories of the Caribbean, using facts and researched information.
Students write a children's book in Spanish. They locate and label the Spanish speaking Caribbean Islands on a map. Students determine the theme, location, and main characters in the book La Isla. They review the present, present progressive and preterite tenses.
Students expand knowledge of Caribbean life. They utilize various research tools including the internet. Students explore scientific concepts related to the ocean. The lessons within this unit are centralized around novels.
