Caribbean Economy Lesson Plans

Learners research and view a video on the geography of the Caribbean. For this Caribbean geography lesson, students go on an imaginary trip to the Caribbean and write postcards and letters telling of their trip. Learners will include information on culture, products and geographical features.

Students imagine themselves on an island in the Caribbean to make postcards for their classmates and write letters about a vacation to their relatives. They view a video on the geography of the islands then research the tourism on one of the islands using the internet.

Learners discuss the role of trade and a global economy. As a class, they identify the costs and benefits of trade and how it is being questioned in today's society. They discover what is imported to the United States and the role of the World Trade Organization.

Students complete a unit that explores the cultures of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba through cooking. They follow step-by-step directions of a variety of recipes, create a Caribbean scrapbook or cookbook, and participate in a simulated market day.

Ninth graders take a trip to Central American and the Caribbean. In this culture and geography lesson, 9th graders research selected countries of the region. Students use their findings to create tri-fold brochures to share with others.

Students explore the countries in the Caribbean. They examine island information, language, climate, culture, currency, places of interest, resort information, and flight information.

Students examine the Caribbean in terms of its music, art, and folklore. As a class, they listen to a folktale and discuss the difference between telling a story and reading a story. In groups, they write their own folktale and share it with the class. They use the internet to research what it was like to grow up in Cuba during the 1970s. To end the lesson, they view examples of artwork and reflect on them in their journals.

Seventh graders create four postcards that illustrate an island on the Caribbean.

Students will work in small groups to gather information about the geography, history, economy, climate, culture, and other aspects of life on the island of Eleuthera. Lesson contains adaptations for all levels.

Students examine a variety of maps and documents to identify physical and cultural features of neighborhoods, cities, states, and countries, to explain the historical migration of people, expansion and disintegration of empires, and the growth of economy.
