A Hard Sell on Stem Cells?

Students examine their prior knowledge of cell regeneration and therapeutic use of stem cells. After reading an article, they discover new techniques for deriving embryonic stem cells. In groups, they research on the different types of stem cells and write about one aspect of interest to them.

The Incredible Edible Cell

Fifth graders view a video and answer questions to become familiar with the parts of the cell and their functions.  In this plant and animal cell lesson, 5th graders write a reseach report about the cell. Students make a model of the cell with edible parts.

All's Well for Stem Cells

By exploring the latest research on cell and tissue renewal your young scientists can understand the various internal body parts and systems examined in these studies.

Cell Discoveries

Young scholars observe, compare and describe cell organelles in terms of their function, structure and operation. They enter and edit information in a database, build and sort a student-designed database and find records in a database.

String Cells

Use this resource to have your class learn about the cell. This resource walks learners through the construction of a model of a cell. This project is completed in a cooperative learning group, and  reinforces the higher-order thinking skill of analogy building.

Cell Size Changes

Students examine the behavior of living cells treated with different types of stimuli. They watch an online movie, examine wet mount slides under a microscope, take an online quiz, and analyze data.

Cell Types and Parts

Eighth graders, after creating a Venn Diagram comparing/contrasting animal and plant cells, writing ten similes describing cell types, or drawing a colored diagram of a cell, list cell types as well as describe and label cell parts. They incorporate their do-now books as they study all about cells.

CELL TRANSFORMATION IN TOBACCO LEAF DISKS

Students work with whole plant material and are not required to measure small quantities, yet they can see evidence of transformed plant cells (plant cells that have genes from bacterial plasmids). This is a laboratory suitable for students who are familiar with the basic principles of plant cell structure, tissue culture, sterile technique, and cell transformation (bacterial infection, plasmid vectors, marker genes, selection medium, and enzyme activity assays).

Stem Cell Research

Students investigate how cell specialization takes place in vertebrate embryos; how white blood cells are specialized to fight viruses, and the role of master control genes in cell development. They investigate the stem cell research debate.

Cell Replication and Cancerous Cells

Students determine why cell growth is limited and requires cell division. They explore the different phases of mitosis, the oncogenes that cause cancer, and possible treatments.
