Cinquain Lesson Plans

A couple of days before presenting this activity, have your class use their cameras outside to take pictures of nature. Their pictures are downloaded onto individual discs to be used in the computer lab later. In class, 4th graders explore cinquains by looking at examples embedded in this activity. Once in the computer lab, they insert their disc with their photographs, and use Microsoft Word to compose a cinquain poem about the picture of their choice. Outstanding!

First graders examine and write cinquain poetry. In this cinquain poetry lesson, 1st graders listen to a cinquain poem, detail the parts of fairy tales, and make a concept map of fairy tale characters using Kidspiration. They examine examples of cinquain poetry and write their own using a template. They add pictures of fairy tale characters to their poems before completing a reflections sheet.

Third graders create a Spring cinquain poem. In this poetry lesson, 3rd graders review the outline of a cinquain poem and brainstorm words about spring. Students create a cinquain poem by using a word processing software program.

Ninth graders examine the VC/V syllable pattern, and write a cinquain. They divide a list of words into syllables and place the accent in the correct place. Next, they define cinquain, read and write examples of cinquain poems, and discuss the patterns in the poems.

Students use the cinquain structure and correct parts of speech to write a poem with a desert theme.

Third graders write cinquain poems and perform associated dances. In this poetry and dance lesson, 3rd graders display smooth energy and sharp energy using hand movements. They brainstorm words for poems that describe an energy quality. They write a class energy cinquain poem.

Students enhance their understanding of parts of speech by writing a cinquain poem about Louisiana. In this cinquain poem instructional activity, students read example cinquain poems and study the format for a cinquain poem. Students create a class poem about a butterfly. Students complete a graphic organizer for a cinquain poem about animals. Students then write a cinquain poem about animals.

Learners create a poem in cinquain form after hearing a poem read to them by their teacher. They are to examine the structure of the poem and make one similiar to it. They can also illustrate their poems if they would like.

Students explore cinquain poetry. They explore various poetry websites, read examples of cinquain poetry, write an original cinquain, and type and publish their poem using a template file and computer printer.

Students use poetry Cinquain to help review nouns, adjectives, verbs, and synonyms. They follow up by composing their own Cinquain.
