Fifth graders demonstrate how to cite sources when writing a research paper. In this research writing lesson, 5th graders view a demonstration on how to cite sources using an included graphic organizer. Students practice citing sources and use note cards to record information.

Have your class read texts on a specific famous person using a Student Encyclopedia. They will learn to use basic research skills to answer questions about their famous person, take notes, and learn how to cite sources to complete a simple bibliography. Note: There is an extension to write a short report available.
Seventh graders research a biome using the Big6 skills. They prepare their own notes and cite sources. They create a PowerPoint presentation to share their findings with the class.
Eleventh graders examine why major tribes were involved in the French and Indian War. They write a short paragraph about the causes and answer an essay question based on text and Internet research, citing sources. They research text and internet sources and give an oral presentation or written presentation.
Learners research and create presentations on a US state. In this US states lesson, students locate sources, take notes, cite sources on their chosen state. Learners then use Microsoft Word to write a letter to the state tourism office. Students create a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class for their purpose of convincing others to move to their state.
Practice citation skills with this activity, which takes learners to the Library/Media center. There, they will view a Powerpoint presentation and practice collecting data in both print and non-print sources. All necessary materials are provided in the lesson, which does include a SMARTboard aspect that is not imperative for the activity.
Students discuss how the Internet has increased the prevalence of plagiarism in high school and in college. They then practice properly citing sources in their own research-based writing.
Young scholars complete a works cited page, make revisions on their writing, and improve their writing skills. In this writing a research paper lesson, students create a bibliography using MLA format and peer evaluate the papers of their classmates. Young scholars then complete a writing checklist and write their final drafts.
