Students explore the sleeping patterns and sleeping habitats of animals. In this where animals sleep activity, students research different animal species. Students also write and illustrate an animal picture book, make connections about their own sleeping patterns and compare them to the different animals they have researched.
Sixth graders write descriptive narratives about animals. In this descriptive writing lesson, the teacher models how to write a paragraph with interesting sensory words and exciting verbs. Students choose a picture of an animal they want to write about. Students begin writing about the animal and use self and peer editing. When the class is finished, all narratives are put together to create a class animal book.
Students explore animal characteristics. In this animal classification lesson, students research 10 animals native to their area and classify each of the animals using their attributes and habits. Students create drawings and poems that feature the animals and create a stem and leaf plot with the classification data they collected.
Students observe an animal growth/sponge capsule over time. They record their observations in a journal. They discuss their findings and try to find other animals in different stages of development.
Students realize that an object moving along a path has a spatial relationship to its environment by using path animation and programming techniques. They explore how to recognize and trace animated path with their fingers on the screen, and demonstrate an understanding of what a path can and cannot do before attempting the technique on their own.
Students complete activities to students letters and numbers. In this letters and numbers lesson, students read One Stuck Duck and view a Power Point. Students make numeral shaped pancakes and eat them. Students make a class animal counting book and play a memory game. Students research animals and numbers for an animal concentration game and make their own counting book.
Students view video clips and use the Internet to look for hidden animals. They then use the Internet to print out animal shapes and color them. They create environments on construction paper in which their animals can hide.
Third graders investigate the meaning of classification in the eight lessons of this unit. Animals are classified in groups of vertebrates, invertebrates, warm-blooded, cold-blooded, mammals, fish, amphibians, birds, and reptiles.
Pupils create an animation of a cell process and insert it into a presentation. They choose a cellular process such as mitosis, osmosis or DNA replication, and create a simple 2D animation.
Students observe and describe animals in the local environment. They recall information about different animals they have seen. They read and discuss their favorite animal books.
