Compound Words Lesson Plans

First graders examine compound words and what they look like.  In this compound word instructional activity, 1st graders read the book, My Baseball Book, and compile a list of compound words from their reading. 

First graders match and combine two words to form compound words. They view and discuss a PowerPoint presentation, complete teacher-made puzzles, and participate in a game in which they "catch" compound words projected from an overhead projector using strips of white poster paper.

First graders discuss what compound words are and what they look like as a whole group.  In this compound words lesson, learnerseach have a single word card and pair up with another student to create a compound word. A valuable, cooperative learning lesson!

First graders review what a compound word is, by reading a story called, Miss Grasshopper and highlighting the compound words they find.  In this reading lesson, 1st graders use three compound words and write a story using the compound words they have chosen. 

Students create compound words by combining pictures. For example, the teacher would show a picture of a lady and a picture of a bug. Students brainstorm other compound words and make a list on the board. Students complete the lesson listening to the poem "A Young Farmer of Leeds."

Students explore the concept of compound words. In this word recognition lesson, students listen to Pan + Cake = Pancake by Amanda Rondeau and discuss compound words. Students then play a game that requires them to use word cards to form compound words.

Students study the make-up of compound words. In this compound words lesson, students work as a class to brainstorm a list of compound words and then draw pictures on a piece of paper to represent each part of the compound words.

Second graders understand the meaning of a compound word. In this compound word lesson, 2nd graders complete a worksheet writing the two parts of a compound word and the new word formed. Students create silly stories with the compound words.

Third graders understand what a compound word is. In this compound words lesson, 3rd graders complete a worksheet putting two words together that form a compound word. Students create a list of these words.

An engaging game of Compound Word Baseball is presented in this literacy lesson. Young readers generate the second part of a compound word when shown the first part on an index card.  Learners form two teams and move around baseball "bases" in the classroom as they complete each compound word.
