Counting Lesson Plans

Students count backwards. In this counting lesson, students read the book Mouse Countand practice their counting. Students put numbered mice in a jar and take them out as they count backwards.

Students investigate patterns in counting.  For this patterns in counting lesson, students estimate the number of beans they can hold in one hand.  Students compare their estimate to the number of beans they could actually hold in one hand and then place the beans on a grid.  Students compare the beans on the grid with the tally on their calculator.  Students discuss the pattern and relationship between the grid with beans and the tally on the calculator.

Young scholars demonstrate how to count by 2's. In this number sense lesson, students review skip counting on the hundreds chart and recognize the pattern of counting by 2's. Young scholars use a reproducible of a calendar to color in the days as they count by 2's.

Third graders problem solve using counting blocks. For this counting with blocks lesson, 3rd graders add, subtract, and multiply demonstrating value with their blocks. Students solve equations provided by instructor.

Students practice counting to the number three. In this number sense lesson, students practice counting to the number three by using various objects. Students arrange and count the objects.

Third graders practice the skill of skip counting while being introduced to the concept of multiplication. In this multiplication as repeated addition lesson, 3rd graders use interlocking cubes to represent the action of multiplying. Students will be introduced to the symbols and notation of multiplication through a chant and corresponding movements.

Students make their own lesson to share with a Kindergartner. In this buddy lesson, students create a recipe for a snack that will include counting ingredients. They meet with a buddy and explain how to make their snack and let the buddy count everything out. 

Students practice counting money in a class "store". In this lesson on counting money, students visit a class store and purchase items - requiring them to count their money at the cash register.

Students listen to a recording of "1,2,,4,5 Once I Caught a Fish Alive" and read "Clown Fish Finds a Friend." For this counting and directional words lesson, students play a fish counting game and place fish on a board in the correct place based on directional words given. Students discuss the sport of fishing and find words that rhyme with numbers 1-10.

Students explore counting and graphing. In this math lesson plan, students practice counting from 1-25 and are exposed to two types of graphs: the pie graph and the bar graph. Students use Skittles to represent a variety of measurements.
