In this lesson students develop a hypothesis for the survival of living fossils such as coelacanths and horseshoe crabs. They discuss theories for the extinction of dinosaurs then research one of the living fossils in detail to evaluate their own hypothesis. There is a Discovery Channel companion video for this lesson.
Students examine the habitat of land hermit crabs in the wild, their diet in the wild, and how to meet their dietary needs. Links will be made with the Food Pyramid and a healthy human diet. After a lecture/demo, students come up with a diet that would be proper for a hermit crab.
