Data analysis Lesson Plans

Students explore data analysis using technology. In this data analysis lesson, students design data investigations, describe data, and draw their own conclusions. Students select the best type of graph, graph and interpret the data, and look for patterns in trends. Students also use a graphing calculator to investigate and communicate their results.

Sixth graders use Excel to create spreadsheets and graphs. In this statistics lesson, 6th graders use a bag of skittles to conduct data analysis. Students complete data collection sheets, create a spreadsheet, bar graph and circle graph using Excel.

Students review the processes of data collection, data analysis and information implementation, as well as yield data, soil data, and remote sensing. Eighth graders investigate the concepts of probability while performing data analysis. They apply statistical methods in order to measure or predict some possible outcomes. The information is collected and graphed, 8th graders analyze the results.

Students calculate the length of time to cool a hot drink. In this data analysis and differential equations activity, students use a TI-89 or TI-92 calculator to find the length of time for a hot drink to cool to room temperature. Readings are taken regularly and a scatter plot of data is graphed.

Students compute interest earned. In this data analysis instructional activity, students examine investments and interest rates. They compute the total interest earned and find the simple interest.

Fourth graders discover how to describe sets of data. In this data analysis lesson, 4th graders use strategies to find the range and median of multiple data sets.
