Students apply reading strategies. In this reading lesson students read a passage and utilize strategies for decoding the text. They infer during reading to find the meaning of vocabulary words. The students self-question as they read and check using a cueing system.
Fourth graders explore physical science by reviewing biology terms. In this biology introduction instructional activity, 4th graders read a list of vocabulary words and give their impression of what they believe the definition is. Students identify the suffixes in order to identify the origin of the word and utilize a dictionary to find the true definitions of the words.
Students use parts of words in order to fill in the blanks to develop the full spelling. This challenges them to finish spelling words. They also practice the skill of recognizing prefixes and suffixes. The words are used to help students predict the events of a story that is read in class.
Eleventh graders write a personal reflection of a historical document. After accessing a digital copy of "The Crisis," they examine the community's reaction to the events portrayed in the story. Students use the information the have gathered to write an essay documenting their reflection on what they have read.
Sixth graders analyze political cartoons. In this womens' suffrage and the Civil War lesson plan, 6th graders decode vocabulary while viewing political cartoons. Students use context clues from the images and predict meaning. Students record information on a word map.
Students engage in a lesson that is about the use of poetic and narrative texts to help build reading comprehension. Specifically, the lesson focuses on the skills of fluency, prediction, and decoding vocabulary. They use the learning strategy of readers' theater.
Eighth graders examine a nonfiction selection in a teacher led lesson. They examine the author's purpose for writing the selection and identify the difference between fact and opinion. The compare and contrast expository and narrative text, use context clues to decode vocabulary, and investigate inferences. Finally, they complete a worksheet.
Students participate in a competitive game of reviewing prefixes. In this word parts lesson students are given a prefix and one member from each team must race to the white board to write a word that contains the prefix.
