Independence or Loyalty: The American Revolution-Writing a Persuasive Speech

Writing from the role of a colonist, eighth graders are asked to choose a side in the conflict, ("Causes of the American Revolution") either to fight for independence or to remain loyal to Great Britain. They imagine that they are at a town meeting, speaking to convince their neighbors to adopt their positions. They write a persuasive speech, incorporating appropriate historical content, facts, and details to support the position adopted.

Fourth graders read and analyze a short story about how the months of the year got their names, and identify the significant and supporting details in the story. With a partner they read the story and answer story comprehension questions and complete a worksheet. Students then create a banner displaying their "quality characteristics."
