I have been told by seasoned educators not to "re-invent the wheel" when coming up with ideas for lessons. So true!! Lesson Planet has a wealth of sources and ideas from some of the greatest teaching minds that are out there...what a blessing to have a resource such as Lesson Planet, to turn to. I am even planning to contribute a lesson or two myself. My daughter is in a teacher education program and I have introduced her to the "Planet". We're spreading the news!

Eighth graders compare the use of rice in the 1700s to the modern use of rice. In this lesson examining the importance of rice in US history, 8th graders learn about the role of rice in the early 1700s and compare the use of rice in cooking then to the modern use of rice in cooking.
Students view different types of thermometers and discuss how they are used to measure temperature. Students watch as the teacher demonstrates with a demonstration thermometer how the "red line" changes with the temperature. Students observe a real thermometer in their classroom.
