Students view vinegar eels under a microscope at different magnifications. They use a DigiScope with the camera attachment in place of the eyepiece. Students count the number of thrashing movements in 10 seconds. They repeat this three times and compute the average number of thrashes. Students describe the muscles in the vinegar eels. They create a video of vinegar eel movement.
This lesson has students compare and contrast the coelacanth, a living fossil, with a moray eel and a bull shark. They complete a Fish Anatomy worksheet while researching the skeleton, body coverings and buoyancy of each fish.
In this lesson students identify and work to eliminate electrical safety hazards in the home. They identify items that use electricity. In this lesson students use a fishing game that allows students to cut pictures of items from magazine; glue the items on the 3" x 6" cut-outs of eels, and then "catch" the electric eels.
Learners view the website More Fish that has 15 small photographs, which can be enlarged by clicking each one. This Web site presents underwater photographs taken by Dr. Steven Herf while he was scuba diving in the Caribbean Sea. The site also has pages showing eels, plantlife, angelfish, and parrotfish.
Students compare foods available for the Pilgrim's Thanksgiving with contemporary Thanksgiving. They create a menu and compute the cost of a turkey dinner, using grocery ads. They write an essay entitled "How to Cook a Turkey."
