Here is an interractive, on-line instructional activity which allows learners to test their knowledge of the states. They have the opportunity to take quizzes on any of the 50 states. These quizzes determine the students retention of important information including: the state capital, flag, tree, flower, bird, abbreviation, and nickname. A great social studies tool for any elementary teacher!
Fourth graders interview older citizens to discover earlier educational history. They write essays based on their interviews.
Students explore force and motion through a series of experiments. For this physics lesson, students create and interpret speed graphs. They build an electromagnet and explain the factors affecting its strength.
Students practice math skills. In this fractions lesson, students discover how to add fractions with common and uncommon denominators. They watch a demonstration on how to add and then practice independently. This lesson includes a link to a video that can offer additional support.
Sixth graders write descriptive narratives about animals. In this descriptive writing lesson, the teacher models how to write a paragraph with interesting sensory words and exciting verbs. Students choose a picture of an animal they want to write about. Students begin writing about the animal and use self and peer editing. When the class is finished, all narratives are put together to create a class animal book.
Participate in a scavenger hunt to find objects beginning with a particular letter sound and take digital photos of them with your scholars. Using software, they find word pictures beginning with particular letters and locate picture stamps that begin with the focus letter. The lesson offers numerous activities including an alphabet book and "eating our way through the alphabet," making a food list relating to each letter.
Students write friendly letters focusing on the use of commas and periods, and on states. For this writing and social studies lesson, students write a friendly letter that does not contain any commas or periods. They include three clues to one of the United States so that a partner can determine the name of that state. They switch letters with a partner, insert the punctuation marks and name the state.
Students investigate the physics of flight by viewing an online video. In this paper airplane construction lesson, students collaborate in groups to create paper airplanes which they will conduct an experiment with. Students create different styles of planes and record their flight data in order to examine which design worked best.
Students investigate religious aspects by creating a Venn Diagram. In this religion instructional activity, students discuss if there are any issues important enough to fight a war over. Students define several religious terms and complete a true or false worksheet and Venn Diagram based on the history of organized religion.
Students explore the Chinese culture. In this social studies lesson plan, students use a computer and webcam to speak with Chinese students. Students write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the information they learned.
