How To Get the Job

Ninth graders identify the skills necessary to apply for and obtain employment. They locate job openings in classified ads, create and submit a resume, cover letter, and thank-you letter using word processing software, and participate in a mock job interview.

 

The Diversity of Filipinos in the United States

Learners in an ESL classroom are introduced to the contributions of the Filipinos to the United States. In groups, they research the history of the Phillipines including its culture, climate, and economy. They discuss the varoius waves of immigration from the country to the United States and state the reasons why they would leave the Phillipines. To end the lesson, they compare and contrast the Filipino immigration experience to those of Mexico and Puerto Rico.

 

Career Exploration Using HyperStudio

Eighth graders conduct research on various careers that are of interest to them. They conduct Internet research on a selected career choice, and create a nine card stack using HyperStudio to describe their career's salary, required skills, and general employment information.

Young scholars design a sound community. In this communities instructional activity, students take on the role of city planners and identify the needs of the community. Young scholars develop a blue print to meet the needs of the community and include new residential, commercial, or industrial zones.

Successful Interviewing

After performing a variety of pre-activities, young scholars will complete steps that lead to a successful interview. Activities will include preparation for the interview, marketing oneself, follow-up and assessment. The students will participate in a mock interview and create a PowerPoint presentation that can be saved for future use.

Young scholars detect and explore local and national nonprofit organizations. In this research project, students explore nonprofit mission statements, activities and career opportunities. Young scholars complete a research question sheet. Students use research information to create a poster.
