Ethnic Groups Lesson Plans

Students explore Nigerian ethnic groups. In this Nigerian colonization lesson, students explore the Igbo, the Hausa- Fulani or the Yoruba and create an illustrated diagram depicting that group's way of life.

Students examine the many different ethnic groups of Utah and their contribution to society. They research the different ethnic groups using the Internet and answer questions.

Students examine ethnic history of the Pacific Northwest in the period 1850-1950. They research documents and images in digital archives to explore immigration of various ethnic groups that settled in the region during this period.

Students investigate the concept of certain ethnic groups that are found in the Sahara area of Africa. They use almanacs, internet, and other resources to find information. Then students work in small groups in order to prepare for a formal report.

Students explore the ethnic groups that settled in Colonial America.  In this history lesson, students examine and discuss how the ethnic groups that settled in Colonial America led to the diverse population in today's society.

Fifth graders explore the culture and contributions of the ethnic groups that make up our nation. In this culture acceptance lesson students locate different countries in the world and find unique facts about that country. Students use that information to create a power point, shadow box, or poster about that country to present to the class.

Seventh graders explore Nepal. In this geography skills lesson, 7th graders research the cultures, climates, ethnic groups and natural resources of Nepal's 3 geographic regions. Students use Google Earth to examine satellite images and use their findings to create travelogue brochures.

Students break down the stereotypes that cultures hold. In this geography lesson plan, students identify stereotypes among other ethnic groups and media sources. Students compare and analyze similarities between themselves and Africans as they become aware of the cultures and diversity of the people of the African continent through a variety of classroom activities.

Students define ethnicity and ethnic group in their own words. In groups, they view comic strips and identify how the strips relate to their family life. Individually, they write their own comic strip about their own ethnic group. To end the lesson, they exchange them with a partner to check for grammar and punctuation.
