Executive Branch

Young scholars investigate the executive branch of the government that is found in Virginia. They differentiate between the different members of the executive team that include the governor and lieutenant governor. Students conduct research about how the governor exercises the powers of the office.

 

Organization of the Executive Branch and the Cabinet Government Superheroes

Students research the branches of the US government by comparing them to Superheroes. In this branches of government lesson, students follow a six step process as they complete research while working in groups and share what they have learned. They answer questions before making an Executive Branch superhero and make and Animoto presentation.

 

Session 20:  Executive Branch and Policy Making

Students illustrate and explore the presidential roles and describe the president's responsibilities. As a class, they define bureaucracy and how the Executive branch may carry out laws. Students present the webs they created in a previous lesson (Session 19: Executive Branch) and demonstrate how Congress may be influenced to introduce a bill.

Pupils examine the powers of the executive branch that is found in the state of Virginia. They create a graphic organizer with two columns that summarize the powers and policy making roles of the executive team. They also compare a class list with the powers listed by the instructor.

Learners read Article II of the Constitution of the United States. After reading, they list and discuss the duties and powers of the President of the United States. In groups, students participate in "Think-Pair-Share" activities and create a T chart depicting the duties and powers of the Executive Branch.
