Family Lesson Plans

Students work as a whole class changing words by changing a vowel sound. The students participate in an oral game in which they use the clues to determine the new word. For example: If a pot were to become a tame family animal, it would be _____. Students change the vowel sound to make pet.

Students explore different zoo animals by researching and viewing pictures of types of animals found at zoos, and discussing how and why animals are selected for zoos. Students classify animals in families, examine various animal environments, complete report template on specific animal, and give simple oral presentation to classmates.

Students explore language arts by participating in a song singing activity. In this rhythm lesson, students listen to a recording of the song "Bingo" in class. Students identify the song patterns and sing it themselves before creating farm animals out of arts and crafts.

Second graders research an animal that is of interest to them.  In this animal biology activity, 2nd graders conduct research and complete an organizing sheet, cut photos of their animal out of magazines, create captions for the photos, and compile them in an album format.  The organizer and guidelines worksheets are included in this activity.

Students react to a series of statements about elephants, then read a news article about how workers at an elephant orphanage are working to return the animals to the wild. In the animal studies and current events instructional activity, the teacher introduces the article with a class vote and a vocabulary activity, then students read the news report and participate in a class discussion. Lesson includes interdisciplinary follow-up activities.

Students explore how people's views on animal treatments differ. Create original trading cards with animal facts by having learners research information on the computer and use it to create animal cards. They will trade cards and add facts to their group of cards. Furthermore, they will  add illustrations to their cards and appropriate language to each card.

Students recognize that animals played an important role for soldiers during the Civil War.  In this Civil War animal mascots instructional activity, students explore how pets are helpful to people.  Students watch a Civil War video and complete a KWL about animal mascots during the war. Students discuss the benefits of animal mascots and loyalty of animals. Students answer questions about animal mascots.

Fourth graders create an animal slide show. In this classification lesson students research one particular animal. The students rely upon computer skills to produce a slide show on the animal that they researched.

Second graders investigate common Ohio animals by creating a list of seasonal behaviors. They conduct research fo find changes in appearance and behaviors of common Ohio animals and compare the behaviors during the four seasons by creating a four-sided, three-dimensional model. Each side of the model represents a different season and shows how the animal changes as a result of the seasonal change.
