Folktales Lesson Plans

Fifth graders locate and identify the countries of Southeast Asia on a map. In groups, they compare and contrast photographs and artifacts from their own lives with those living in Asia. They write their own folktales based off of Cinderella using characters in Southeast Asian culture.

Sixth graders present reader's theatre by improvising folktales from different countries. In groups, they produce an improvisation of a folktale story from an assigned reading of a folktale.

Students use maps to locate the countries of Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. In groups, they compare and contrast the three countries in regard to their culture, morals and values. They read various examples of folktales and write their own response to it using new vocabulary.

Students create their own folktale after listening and reading numerous folktales. In this folktale lesson plan, students work together to create a folktale focusing on Hispanic culture.

Students explore the culture of Mexico through folktales. They identify cultural differences and similarities through the reading of folktales. Students create pocket books related to Mexican folklore. They read and discuss literary pieces. Additional cross curriculum activities are included.

Students are introduced to the characteristics of folktales and their purpose. As a class, they listen to a folktale, answer questions about the characters and share which part they enjoyed the best. In groups, they compare and contrast the various folktales they have had read to them and work together to make puppets of the characters.

Pupils are introduced to the characteristics of fables and folktales. In groups, they read and identify the various elements in the stories they read from around the world. For each story, they analyze the setting and the various characters and compare them with each one they read.

Students explore the culture of Puerto Rico. They create maps of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. They work in small groups to research a decade in history and add drawings and pictures to a timeline of their decade. They practice Spanish words and read folktales of Puerto Rico.

Students define and discuss the words folktale, legend, and myth. They read Native American folktales, then plan and present short plays about their folktale.
