Forestry and Natural Resources Lesson Plans

Third graders examine geography by creating a booklet. In this natural resources lesson, 3rd graders investigate the agriculture in the state of Louisiana by utilizing the web and completing a graphic organizer. Students collaborate with classmates and compile their Louisiana natural resource information into a readable booklet.

Students examine the effects of the loss of the bison after the Europeans arrived in North America. They conduct a demonstration using beans to demonstrate the difference between the number of bison before and after the arrival of the Europeans, and discuss current natural resources that are over-harvested.

Students explore the ways in which past civilizations used natural resources, and compare that to how we use the environment today.

Students write a one page description of a career in the Science/Natural Resources Career Cluster.  In this careers lesson, students identify the career majors and at least two careers in each major in the Science/Natural Resources Career Cluster.  Students discover course of study and recommended electives.

Students examine the human impact on natural resources. They read and discuss an article, evaluate nations regarding their environmental problem-solving, develop a presidential speech on the environment, and conduct a natural resources scavenger hunt.

First graders identify natural resources and place items into the proper category. They complete a Natural Resources Chart and draw things listed on the chart. After walking the school grounds, 1st graders write and draw about things they found and categorize the natural resource from which they was made.

Sixth graders compare finished wood products to the raw materials from which they come. They determine how consumption impacts the availability of the natural resource found in the forest. They create an advertisement for one product.

Students visit a sugar maple tree and then explore how sweet treats come from a sugar maple. They sample products and report their preferences on a graph.

Third graders complete a math activity with beans and relate the beans to the natural ways of living of people in the past and the present. In this natural environment lesson plan, 3rd graders discuss and learn about natural resources and how to use them.

Students examine how ancient people used natural resources. In this renewable resource lesson plan, students will be put into 5 groups each focusing on a different past civilization. Each group will identify they types of resources their civilization used and then label them renewable, recyclable, or neither.
