Fractions Lesson Plans

Fourth graders find new names for fractions.  In this equivalent fractions lesson, 4th graders use manipulatives to model fractions and rename them. Students recognize that the new names show equivalent fractions.  Students explain how the fraction got a new name.

Students recognize solid shapes distributed for making fractions. In this fraction and whole activity, each student uses a wheel and determine which part of a fraction is missing.

  Young scholars play a fraction dice game to familiarize themselves with equivalent fractions.  In this fraction lesson, students work with a partner to play the game and young scholars write a reflection to conclude the activity.   

Students practice with fractions and percentages as they relate to real life situations.  In this fractions and percents lesson, students plan a getaway weekend with a small group, calculating their expenses and making decisions based on cost.  Students then complete worksheet where they write all related information of their getaway trip. Students answer questions on a worksheet regarding their experiences with their budget.

Third graders use strips of paper to find equivalent fractions.  For this equivalent fractions lesson, 3rd graders students fold paper into thirds and shade 2/3 of the paper.  Students fold the same paper in six parts and predict how many parts will be shaded.  Students repeat again folding the paper into 12 parts. Students record their findings each time. Students use fraction circles to find 1/4.  Students complete worksheets.

Second graders review fractions and calculate the part left of the whole.  In this fractions lesson, 2nd graders explore a demonstration problem and then solve examples taking away fraction parts. Students complete an assignment.

Fourth graders solve a riddle using the fractional parts of words.  In this fractional funnies lesson, 4th graders chose a joke and create a fractional riddle for it.  Students share and solve each others riddles.

Fourth graders study quilts and related activities to illustrate geometry, basic fractions, and patterning skills. They choose a precut piece of pre-cut color/shape construction paper to discuss the pattern, color, shapes, sizes, fractions, other math/geometry terms in small groups. Afterward, they regroup and repeat in different peer groups. Creative extensions included.

Sixth graders explore using inverse operations to solve decimal and fraction problems. In this decimal and fraction instructional activity, 6th graders prepare ribbon for a part and need to cut it in equal lengths. Students analyze the problem.

Second graders become familiar with the fractions in a whole.  In this sheet cake instructional activity, 2nd graders view a Count on it clip about pumpkin pies.  Students cut a sheet cake into eight parts and write as a fraction.  Students understand the number of parts in a whole equal the total number of parts.
