Fourth graders experiment to see which objects decompose. In this compost lesson, 4th graders observe the changes of labeled objects in a bag. Leave the objects for one month and record the changes by observation and weight. Students note the items that changed to compost.
Students become familiar with the temperate rainforest. In this forest ecosystem lesson, students identify the producers, consumers and decomposers in the forest ecosystem. Students sort cards and identify the trophic level of the rainforest. Students view and discuss various artifacts of the rainforest.
Students explore decay in ecosystems by investigating a rotting log and/orcreating a decomposition chamber. They make predictions and answer questions about the changes involved.
Students investigate a local forest ecosystem and discover the biotic and abiotic parts of the forest. Students observe the groundcover, understory, and canopy layers as well as collect leaves and bark in order to identify trees in the forest as part of the "Finding Out About Forests" project.
Students prepare a wet mount of a blue-green algae. They examin their sample under a microscope and record their observations. Students view prepared slides of several bacteria and record observations. They collect bacterial samples from various locations in the school. Students describe their resoning for selecting their locations. They grow the bacteria in a petri dish and analyze their results.
Students explore the process of decomposition. In this ecology and measurement lesson, students prepare a worm home to be used for vermicomposting. Students weigh a group of worms and the added food, recording this information on a data sheet. Students compare the weight of the worms to the weight of the food eaten and compute percentages. Students use observation skills to discuss decomposition.
Students explore food. In this processed and fresh foods lesson, students discover how some foods are processed and how they differ from fresh food. Students of all ages can explore the question "how do seeds grow?", design an experiment to answer the question, predict the outcome of the experiment then conduct the experiment.
Learners take samples from local freshwater sources and examine them for macroinvertebrate life. They take samples from both shallow and deep freshwater environments, measure temperature, and classify organisms found in their samples.
Students use existing knowledge of microbes, focusing on the relationship between microorganisms and foodborne illness, as well as the implications that foodborne illness has on human health.
