Students observe pictures taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. From a given website, students observe images of the Einstein Cross, Black Eye Galaxy, Hoag's Object, merging and interacting galaxies and more. This lesson plan gives a short description of each picture listed on the website.
Tenth graders experiment with detection techniques for black holes by modeling the rotation of galaxies with larger and larger masses in the center. They discover while some events cannot be directly observed they may be observable in other ways.
Students research the universe, including the Milky Way and other galaxies. They investigate black holes in space. They create a replica of a galaxy on posterboard using Crayola Neon Twistables for concentric rings found in the galaxy. They cut and paste neon stars on the galaxy. They present an oral report to the class on their galaxy.
Students explore the sun, the galaxy, and planets. As an introduction to a class discussion of the sun, students perform a skit. They discuss the elements that make up the sun, stars and planets.
Second graders visit a website. In this exercise lesson, 2nd graders talk about fitness and the need for daily activity. Students visit a website called The Galaxy and practice taking their pulse.
Eighth graders create a drama presentation in order to illustrate the comparison of sizes between a galaxy and an atom. They use an outline to help prepare the dialogue. Then students act out the play to illustrate the main differences.
Eighth graders identify and organize the stages of a star's life cycle while exploring different kinds of galaxies. They view a power point presentation and take a short quiz. A homework assignment is given out with this lesson.
Students describe the different bodies that make up our solar system. They explain the place of our solar system within the Milky Way Galaxy and the universe. They explain day and night and the Earth's movement, then discuss the causes of the seasons.
Students study how the sun is used to tell time and its role in the galaxy.
Students study the solar system and our galaxy, then write a science fiction story based on what they discover. They utilize worksheets and access websites imbedded in this plan to gain ideas for their stories.
