Students become familiar with the temperate rainforest. In this forest ecosystem lesson, students identify the producers, consumers and decomposers in the forest ecosystem. Students sort cards and identify the trophic level of the rainforest. Students view and discuss various artifacts of the rainforest.
Students complete a six-week unit on North American birds. They conduct research, develop fact sheets, create labeled bird drawings, write a dictionary of bird vocabulary words, create a Concentration game, and observe birds in their community.
Young scholars visit the Globe Projector exhibit in Xpedition Hall and explore the different types of map projections. They consider different careers requiring geographic knowledge and decide what projection would serve them best for each.
Seventh graders list the features of an ecosystem and identify local bird species. In this bird lesson students work in groups to formulate a hypothesis and test their theory by collecting and analyzing data.
Pupils discuss the relationship between a habitat and the environment. In groups, they use the internet to research the relationship between the animals and the habitat on their card. They present their information to the class to end the lesson.
Students develop an interactive diary to record bird seed consumption. In this habitat instructional activity, students predict and record the amount of birdseed eaten each week by birds.
Students create a mural to demonstrate NW bird habitat. They increase vocabulary related to birds and bird habitat. Then they identify habitats in the NW that meet the needs of specific species of birds.
Students participate in an integrated unit about birds to develop language arts skills.
