The Librarian Who Measured the Earth

Students read the Librarian Who Measured the Earth and discuss Ancient Greece.  In this Ancient Greece lesson, students create scrolls to simulate those of Ancient Greece. Students use the method of Eratosthenes and calculate the circumference of the Earth.

Symmetrical Geometry Paintings

Here is a clever, cross-curricular lesson that combines art and geometry. Learners design a painting that uses geometrical shapes and is symmetrical. Sponge-shaped geometrical figures are used to design half a page and fold them to create the other half. Everyone displays their pictures of geometry and symmetry.

Marshmallow Geometry

In this three-dimensional shapes geometry lesson, learners identify geometric solids and name their properties. They define "face," "edge," and "vertex," and construct geometric solids using marshmallows as vertices and toothpicks as edges.

Interpreting Measures of Center

Eighth graders use calculators and a hand out to calculate the mean, median, mode, range, and outliers for three sets of data. They select the measure of center they feel best represents the set of data and justify their choice. Students collect information about their favorite music, research to find more data, and analyze the central tendencies for their music. Students create a graph to represent the data.

 Scientific Measurement Exercise

Students measure irregularly shaped bones, once using a variety of measurement methods and tools, and then again using standard conventions and metric tape measures. They explore firsthand that standardizing data collection makes observations more precise and repeatable.

Measurement: Bubble Mania

The students will measure the diameter, approximate the circumference, and determine the area of a soap bubble print. Students are given opportunities to practice measurement skills as they examine a soap bubble print.

The Circle's Measure

Listen to the story "Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi" and solve the riddle and to save Sir Cumference from the knights.  Your students will love mixing an activity with story and will practice their measuring skills while completing the puzzle to connect Pi to their measurements.

Measurement of Volume

Students measure the volume of a clear container using a candle and sand. In this measuring volume lesson plan, students time how long a candle stays lit in a clear glass container. They fill it with sand and find the volume and then use a larger container and time how long a candle stays lit in the larger container. They set up a proportion to find the volume of the larger container. Students measure the volume with sand in the larger container and compare their answers.

Centimeters and Inch Measurement

Second graders measure objects in inches and centimeters.  In this measuring lesson, 2nd graders compare and contrast inches and centimeters. Students record objects on a knowledge hunt. Students complete worksheets.

Measuring Techniques - Level II

Identify appropriate abbreviations, food-measurement terminology, techniques, equivalents, calculate recipe-size adjustments, and demonstrate proper measuring techniques. Identify abbreviations Compute equivalents Identify measuring techniques an
