Groundhog Day Lesson Plans

Students use a movie as an aide to learn how to speak English. In this using movies to teach English lesson, students watch the movie, "Groundhog Day" which is repetitive in nature and humorous as they learn about the folk belief of the groundhog, and compare city dwelling and country living. They use the movie as a basis for learning new vocabulary.

In this lesson learners discover the ideas of enlightenment by reading historical poetry.  In this philosophical lesson, learners read poems by Sir Walter Scott and Sergeant Joyce Kilmer while discussing the themes of the writing with classmates.  In this lesson learners view the Bill Murray film Groundhog Day and complete several activities based on the characters and existential viewpoints from the film.

In this lesson students play the Groundhog Day tag game to follow instructions and play according to the rules of the game. They attempt to run to the "holes" to be safe or if caught they move to a pre-determined area off the playing field.

Learners use the SMART Board to learn about Groundhog day and create a tally chart of predictions for whether he will see his shadow or not. In this Groundhog day lesson plan, learners respond to questions throughout the lesson.

Students listen to a teacher read aloud of Betsy Lewin's, Groundhog Day and visit an informational site about groundhogs seeing their shadows. They create a spreadsheet based on their predictions of the groundhog seeing his shadow.

Students access a variety of Groundhog Day themed websites. They locate information about the history of Groundhog Day and why we celebrate it. They read about Punxsutawney Phil and groundhogs and play interactive games.

Students research and discuss the history and traditions of Groundhog Day, facts about groundhogs, and find pictures of groundhogs using the Internet. They draw pictures and write stories about ground hogs.

Learners, with teacher assistance, researching on the Internet and predict whether Puxatawny Phil see his shadow on Groundhog Day.

This lesson has students read the history of this tradition, examine Phil's predictions for the last 100 years.

Students practice moving in general space and to increase listening skills.To enhance movement during this activity ask them to perform a variety of different locomotor skills as they move throughout the space.
