Hamster Lesson Plans

Students recognize what is needed to care for a class pet.  In this class pet lesson plan, students feed, and care for a hamster.  Students recognize that the cage needs changing and the hamster needs food and water.  Students recognize that hamsters need to be in a warm place.

Pupils read books, learn about the letter h, and eat apples all to learn about hamsters. In this hamsters lesson plan, students also use play dough to make hamsters.

Students examine how to take care of the class pet hamster. They identify the various items needed to take care of a hamster, discuss how to feed their class pet and clean the cage, and take turns feeding the hamster.

Young scholars use their senses to compare a frog and a hamster. In this animals comparison lesson plan, students get into groups and observe, smell, feel, and listen to what their animals are like, and classify them into categories.

Young scholars develop their scientific method skills. In this science lesson, students observe 2 hamsters for the duration of the school year. Young scholars compare the weights of the 2 hamsters in September and again in May. Students provide the hamsters with the same amount of foods and water, but make exercise equipment available to only 1 hamster.

Using this quick activity, you can have your class review what they have learned about mammals. Learners sit in a circle, and take turns naming a mammal. This activity could be enriched by having learners go to their desks, identify a mammal, and name the characteristics of this group of animals.  

Students explore a recent salmonella outbreak in young students linked to pet rodents. They create pamphlets to help assist and inform pet owners about the disease and necessary health precautions.

Young scholars understand how a spell checker is used with a word processing program. In this spell checking lesson, students use the spell checker to correct a document with errors created by the teacher.

Students identify animals that are pets and make cookies of them. In this pets lesson, students find similarities and differences between types of pets and list the names of each part. Students become familiar with the names of baby animals. Students write pet subtraction problems.
