Students determine that the lands the English settled on were owned and inhabited by 70,000 Indians. They consider that the London Company sold land charters to the English, which gave them illegal title to lndian land and that the Puritans established the largest colony, Massachusetts Bay Colony, which had two branches: Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Fifth graders track the sunrise and sunset from December to March. They determine the amount of daylight present during winter in Ile a la Crosse and in Australia. They discover that when we have winter it is summer in Australia.

Fifth graders look at pictures of transportation from then and now. They do a before activity of writing attributes lists for the transportation of then and now. Once attributes lists are done and complete they use the attributes list to write a descriptive paragraph about the transportation for then, and a descriptive paragraph about transportation now.

Fifth graders study how animals change their coats for the winter and that plants go to the dormancy stage in the winter. They identify components of habitat as food, water, shelter and space and apply knowledge of these components to habitat requirements of various species of animals.
