Huntington's Disease Lesson Plans

Students develop and express opinions on personal and societal issues in biology through journal entries (written and other forms), oral position statements and group discussions.

Students debate and discuss both sides of a controversial issue following a study of DNA, genes and the basic science of inheritance.

Pupils investigate DNA and codes for proteins. They explore the following concepts: mitochondrial DNA, jumping genes, junk DNA, introns, genomic imprinting, anticipation, the "not-so-universal" genetic code, and directed mutations. They refer to a study guide to accompany reference articles on these anomalies.

Students examine Punnett squares charts and analyze how they are used for successful breeding and predictions of certain traits. They complete interactive Punnett square charts, quizzes, problems, and concentration games.

Tenth graders work on a project about cellular biology and genetics. In this biology lesson, 10th graders research about the assigned human body system and genetic disorders that affect it. They create a multimedia presentation and present it to an audience.
