Illinois Lesson Plans

Students read and discuss the important environmental issues of acid rain and global climate change in relation to Illinois coal. According to the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program, acid rain has had minimal effects on our environment. They then answer questions in reference to the information that they read.

Fourth graders research and present information about what the state of Illinois is like today. They create a virtual field trip of the state.

Seventh graders locate the Illinois & Michigan Canal and related landmarks on various maps. They explain the challenges associated with building a canal. They access websites imbedded in this plan and watch a video to aid their research.

Students create a flow chart explaining the duties of the elected officials of the state of Illinois. They use quantum learning activities to remember specifics.

Third graders engage in a wide variety of cross-curricular activities designed to give them a thorough understanding of the history of the Illinois & Michigan Canal. There are a very nice set of activities included in this plan!

Pupils identify and research key event in the history of Illinois during the 1800's and create a dramatic skit or oral report based on the event.

Fourth graders explore Illinois state history by finding six historical photos and then putting them in sequential order.

Students create a journal that includes historic events that occurred in Illinois in the 1700's that features entries on the same topics from different perspectives.

Students apply the processes of scientific inquiry to analyze topographic features accordingly. They describe how changes in atmospheric climatic conditions can result in changes in the geological features of Earth over time Students prepare a report on how atmospheric conditions have affected the land and water features found in Illinois today.

Students explore the immigration of Europeans to Illinois. They write a one page diary entry from the life of an immigrant in Illinois. In addition, they develop a 3 page typed essay discussing The Illinois-Michigan Canal as it relates to the Irish in Illinois.
