Ninth graders use authentic texts to acquire information about an average Russian home and to compare and contrast a Russian home with a home in the U.S. Students participate in a variety of activities focused on the mode of communication.
Students analyze economic and political freedoms. Once they identify ways to measure them, they explore the relationship between the two freedoms and social well-being. In groups, they select 20 countries from the four freedom categories and graph the relationship between their economic freedom and the gross domestic product.
Students examine the geography of Russia's rivers. There are a variety of activities for them to discover the facts of rivers. The extension activities are helpful to incorporate the subjects of science and ecology.
Students research a variety of facts about rice. They read books, access information on the Internet and use maps to determine major rice growing areas in the world and the patterns of distribution for this crop. Students create maps to show their findings.
Students discover what type of information in an atlas by participating in a scavenger hunt. With a partner, they try to find the answers to many questions as possible. They exchange their papers with another partner group and check each other's answers.
Students prepare statements that specific groups of people might make about the evaporation in the Aral Sea region. They research the Aral Sea and take notes on how specific groups of people are affected by the sea's retreat. Students draw pictures comparing the Aral Sea in 1973 and 1999, using satellite images as references.
Sixth graders participate in a geography tag game that involves identifying the seven continents, U.S. states, and the countries of Europe. In teams representing the different geographical areas of the globe, they run to a base line when their areas are called out while another team tries to tag them.
High schoolers investigate the concept of the physical geography of Russia and Central Asia. They identify geographical locations and define some of the different features found in various places. Students take part in class discussion using focus questions.
Pupils explore natural resources found in Russia and Central Asia. Using the internet and other sources, they research and identify the primary exports of each country and the laws governing the environment. After an introduction into Faberge eggs, students discover reasons these eggs were created.
High schoolers engage in a lesson that is about developing countries and they conduct research with the help of the internet. They examine the economic indicators on a data chart and have class discussion while conducting analysis.
