Koi Lesson Plans

Students engage in a creative project of making a paper koi pond meant to illustrate the type of life that can be found in the pond ecosystem. They build cultural appreciation for the Japanese by researching the use of the koi ponds.

In this lesson learners explore the Koi and make their own model of a Koi using clay.

In this lesson students study the Japanese art of Koi Nabori or carp kites. They create their own carp kites with repeating patterns.

In this lesson learners listen to the story "A Carp for Kimiko" and discuss its theme/lesson. In this lesson students simulate a town hall meeting, giving results.

This lesson has students read an issue of Spider magazine. In this teacher guide, students complete pre-, during, and post-reading activities to increase vocabulary, comprehension, and inferencing development. This lesson has students discover facts about communities around the world (China, Africa, Japan) through reading a variety of short stories.

Students examine various pond water samples to identify water quality. In this water quality lesson, students will identify levels of nitrates, ammonia, pH, hardness,and alkalinity in pond water. They will explain importance of water quality in ponds.

In this lesson students construct simple dragon puppets in honor of Chinese New Year. They are introduced to Chinese mythology, make the puppets out of recycled materials and put on a show with the finished puppets.

Students explore common fish and plants found in an ornamental pond. They dig and install a pond.
